Horse Racing Today Can Be Together Online And On Turf

By John Walker

There is a clever, intentional ambiguity in the title of a website named 'horse racing today'. On the one hand it could mean the state of a very old industry in contemporary culture. On the other hand it could refer to a site which allows betting on daily horse racing events. In both cases the term is relevant.

Horse racing has always been popular across the whole social spectrum. Working class men follow the form from heir favorite drinking holes and at the opposite extreme oil moguls and monarchs keep their own stables and like to appear in newspapers leading in winners. Apparently the appeal of equine champions is universal.

Although some people call this activity a sport it is difficult to understand how watching animals run is a sport in the sense of requiring any sort of skill or energetic input except insofar as the horses and jockeys are concerned. Those who follow activities enthusiastically are either patrons or gamblers because a sport cannot be defined as simply anything that raises the pulse rate.

Equine aristocrats have a considerable edge on their human counterparts because performance has distinguished them. This is the opposite of the human situation where performance has no role to play. Even a queen bee is expected to lay many more eggs than a human queen who can be silly, sickly and vicious without any consequence. This may be why human aristocrats seem to be fascinated with thoroughbreds which really are well bred.

Gamblers and wealthy people do provide funds for what can be an important industry in many countries. Although the product might be nothing more than leisure activity, that does not alter the fact that it can make a serious contribution to a national economy. Starting from breeding farms and extending through veterinarians, hay farmers, trainers and caterers and farriers to the jockeys the industry supplies jobs and creates needs and opportunities. These structures are basic to any sort of real economic health.

In the early stages of the Industrial Age economic growth and development was seen in the erection of factories that manufactured goods from raw materials. The generation of electricity, the building or roads, dams and airports was see as necessary to support growth. Professions such as law and accountancy also depended on population and economic growth.

It became apparent that concepts such as sustainable development would play an increasingly important role in the future. Gaming has always been part of economic activity but in the twenty-first century it has taken on new meaning. It signifies a vital new element in economic activity that fits with sustainable development.

Horse racing today continues its long history but in the role of online gaming. The performances of animals under various conditions are studied closely and bets placed accordingly. This mental activity imparts an intellectual dimension to the excitement and interest of watching animals race. For thousands of people it is an absorbing hobby. When they enjoy an occasional win they might feel as though they have accomplished an academic achievement.
