Classification of Poker Variants

By Jack Hobson

In poker, the play mainly focuses on betting, and that's why a protocol needs to be respected in order to hurry up the game, minimizing confusion, and increase security while playing. Different poker games are played using different types of bets, and small variations in etiquette can be observed between poker rooms, but for the most part the following rules and protocol are noticed by the majority of poker players. One thing lots of people like to do is tinker with things. For this reason, dozens of types of poker games and rule variations exist. We all think poker is a great game, but over the years, players changed the rules just a little to make the play more interesting to them, the most popular changes caught on and became new games in their own right. While there are many types of poker, there are generally three main versions - Draw Poker, Stud Poker, and Community Card Poker.

Among them, draw poker is probably most common version of poker. In this game, you get dealt a complete hand before any bets are placed. These cards are hidden from the other participants. Then you have the option to change a certain number of cards in order to improve your hand.

Regular Five-card Draw is a good example of draw poker. Then, another is stud poker is a variant where you receive a mix of face-down and face-up cards. This means players know some of the cards you are holding in your hand, but not all of them. Five-card stud is an example of Stud poker. Another version is the community card poker , here your hand is combined with shared face-up cards. For example, if there are two aces in the community hand then all the players from the table have two aces in their hand. That can make for some interesting situations, and also makes for the need to have a very strong hand.

Rule variations are typically not their own game, but an advanced set of rules for variants of games. The Draw Poker game California Lowball is a good example of this. Other rule variations might include wild cards where some designated card can be any card you please. When he deals, the dealer might say Deuces wild, so if you get a deuce, it can be anything, thus 2 jacks and a deuce becomes 3 jacks. Twist rules allow a gamer to buy cards from the deck. If they can afford it, gamblers can keep buying card after card until satisfied. This is an easy way to to make the pot bigger and a great way to lose your shirt. Sometimes the number of cards used will be minimized and it's called using a Stripped deck. Poker was originally played with only twenty cards, and this is a way to honor our pastime.

As you can see there are many ways a bet can be used as a useful tool. Expert players are acknowledge of all of these and you should be too. Better than just memorizing the examples in order to have success in poker betting.
