Ways Space Battles Work In Video Games

By Patricia Z. Ramsey

Space battles have been a critical element in science fiction themed video games for decades because of their power to excite the player. Video game designers have needed to be very creative when making games based in outer space, especially since these games reach far into the world of science fiction to create characters, settings, and other elements. Naturally, some designers feel that they have more freedom when they are working in the world of science fiction and can use all kinds of made up places and characters to transport the player to an entirely new world. There are many technical difficulties, for sure, when it comes to designing a realistic space battle that will convince the player that they are really have a deep space shootout.

Space battles in science fiction themed video games usually occur with players controlling a variety of different spacecraft. There are real time strategy games that, instead of giving attention to individual characters, give you the power to build and control an army. They are extremely technical and let the player meticulously prepare every aspect of their fleet so that when the moment of battle arrives they are ready to achieve victory. Traditionally, strategy games rely on overhead views that allow you to see all of your fleet's ships and spacecraft in one large view.

First person space shooters send you into space battles as if you were truly in the cockpit of a high speed attack ship. You do not observe as a third person from the sky, but rather as if you were in the middle of the skirmish, trying to contend with the laser beams and bombs being sent around you. A lot of gamers prefer this style of video game because they get a sense that they are really there and it tends to produce more excitements and thrills as your battles rage in the distance realms of outer space.

The larger part of games put you against the programming of the game's computer, but there are many modern games that allow you to play directly with other gamers. Thousands of gamers fight against one another in massively multiplayer online games, or MMO's, which are gaining popularity.

Space battles are some of the most exciting moments of modern video games that take place in science fiction settings. First person shooters, real time strategies, and MMO's are all developed to use these fights in different ways to entertain the gamer.
