You can experience the fun of a space MMO, or massively multiplayer online game, together with hundreds of other players who are also playing in the same virtual world. Online games have created an entirely new kind of game; in the early days of video games, most games only allowed one or two players to use the game at a time but now thousands of people can log online and interact within the same game. Gaming servers allow people from all over the world to connect to the game's system and interact with one another regardless of what the local time might be. Though modern games represent a definite leap forward as far as technology and graphics are concerned, networked multiplayer space games are not a new concept.

Games were originally networked together to make space MMO gaming possible in the 1970's, but it was not yet massively multiplayer by today's standards. The genre of space themed games first broke into the world of multiplayer gaming in 1974 with the release of Spasim, a game that use sci-fi elements in its interface. There was a chat system enabled in this game which allowed for a maximum of 15 players to be logged on simultaneously. While these features are standard in modern MMO's, they were totally revolutionary at the time.

Video game developers started to realize that space MMO's represented a substantial money making opportunity, especially with the Internet becoming more popular and easily accessible in the 1990's. The rules controlling Internet commercialism were quite strict during the early parts of the 1990's and as a result, game developers were not able to create such a large market for these games as they might have wanted to; you could play some privately served games for $6 or $12 an hour.

When policies came to be less strict and MMO game developers were able to charge customers to join their networks, the game genre exploded. Dozens of games were designed to be played on PC while linked on international servers with thousands of other players. The ability to chat was still there, but it was second place to the excitement of having a fully virtual gaming world.

Millions of accounts are open for today's most popular massively multiplayer online games, some of which have been online for several years. Space MMO games have gained popular since the start of online gaming history when graphics were simple; now space games represent some of the most advanced graphics of all.
