Making A Profit Through Basketball Handicapping

By George Robison

When hearing the term basketball handicapping, most people think it refers to creating a disadvantage for more experienced players in order to equalize the potential for a less experienced player. This, in fact, is the original use of this term. However, in modern sports, gambling is a big part of the game.

This more adult definition has more to do with what team wins a game. Bets are being made on point spreads as well. Many people are first introduced to this concept through betting pools at the office

Some less experienced betters often assume that statistics or home court advantage is the best determining factor. This is not necessarily true. There are many other issues to consider when placing bets and determining point spreads.

Professionals look at the daily line movement. Each day a point spread is predicted for upcoming games. This is referred to as the opening line or the morning line. Bookies set this up early in the day with hopes of getting the same number of bets on both sides, which guarantees them a profit. This line movement will change throughout the course of the day.

This line movement allows professional gamblers to manipulate public consensus, and thus misleading other gamblers. A seasoned professional knows this, and waits till the very last minute. They know to look at the starting line up, as well as other factors.

In basketball handicapping, knowing the scores from previous games between the two teams can be very revealing, as score spread are often consistent depending on how two teams match up. Being familiar with the teams is important, as there are teams with weak offense or a player who gives the ball over too often, and this impacts the outcome. The more a gambler knows about the teams, the better they are able to middle their bet and place a gamble on both sides.
