Splendors Of The Wind River WY Region

By Deanne Shepard

The Cowboy State (also known as the Equality State; it was the first to grant women the right to vote) has many famous tourist attractions, such as Yellowstone National Park. Fewer people know that the Wind River WY region is a place of scenic wonders, history, and local color. The name 'Wind River' is used to designate a long mountain range, a spectacular lake, a river, a huge valley called the Basin, and an Indian reservation, all in north central Wyoming.

As a vacation destination, this region has every outdoor activity you can think of. The scenery is spectacular - and there's a whole lot of it. The mountains are truly majestic, with 19 of the state's highest 20 peaks in the WR Range. There's a Gorge below the Boysen Reservoir and Dam that rivals the Grand Canyon in visual impact. The Continental Divide runs along the tops of the mountains; just crossing it should be one of life's ambitions.

What to do when you get there? Well, people of all ages like to pan for gold, and there are many creeks with the right mix of gravels to have 'color' in their shallows. Rodeos give a glimpse of the cowboy life and the Wild West. There are many national and state parks to visit, with visitor centers, museums, and wildlife. Ghost towns still stand in the shadow of the mountains, and petroglyphs can be seen on canyon walls.

There are more than 1,300 lakes in WR country for fishing, boating, swimming, and other water sports. The mountains and hills can be explored on a mountain bike, a horse, or an off-road vehicle. People come for hunting, skiing, quality golf, hiking, and rock climbing. Authentic reproduction Indian villages are always fun. All of these activities are within easy reach of your campsite, lodge, or hotel.

For those who like to gamble, the Northern Arapaho tribe hosts Wyoming's largest casino, with all the amenities needed to make staying over a great experience. They have a ninety-room hotel with two restaurants and an espresso bar. There are two gift shops with authentic Native American jewelry, pottery, rugs, and other goods for sale.

If not all of your group wants to gamble, the hotel offers bus tours of the area. Yellowstone National Park is within driving distance, as are the Grans Tetons. Jackson Hole Ski Resort is also close by the reservation.

The Wind River is 185 miles long; its name changes to the Bighorn when it reaches the Owl Mountains. It runs through north central Wyoming, a vast region of barren mountainside, pristine lakes ringed with evergreens, and high overlooks that show just how big this state is. You'll need your photographs to reassure yourself you weren't dreaming.

This unforgettable region of the United States is a wonderful destination for those who love wilderness, revisiting the early days of the country's history, and outdoor sports. Much of what you'll see hasn't changed since the first human set foot on the mountain peaks or fished in the River.
