Designing An Immersive Space Game

By Gladys X. Vance

Lots of folks enjoy playing space game style video games because they offer a chance for the player to revel in a science fiction fantasy world. People have been utilizing video games to forget their worries and revel in the excitement of a different world for many years; even older games allowed a sense of escape for the gamer. The games of the 1970's and 1980's had not much to give in the way of visual graphics, but that did not stop them from making fun and entertaining games; the ideas and concepts that those designers had are still the basis for modern games that feel more realistic than ever thanks to advanced technology. In spite of all the advancements in technology, however, you can still find many of the basic elements of those original games in modern space games played online and on consoles.

The space game concepts that were brought to gamers back in the 1980's are still being used in modern games, such as defending space bases and using a fleet of space ships to do so. Old games had very simple graphics, usually using basic shapes and lines to display bases, ships, and laser beams streaking across a black landscape with the occasional white dot in the background made to look like distant stars. The way we play video games has been altered dramatically since developers now have very advanced visual graphics to work with so that laser beams and explosions can be complex and textured, making you believe that war is really taking place in space.

Almost all of the space game designs of the past were made for one player at a time; you could not battle with other players. These games definitely demanded patience of stalwart gamers who wanted to get their turn to play after their friend's fleet expired. There are new games that let you play with other gamers linked up to your same console while others allow you to wirelessly connect with others through the Internet and play on a networked server. Expanding the universe of space games to bring together your friends or hundreds of other people from all around the world really changes the way you play.

No matter what takes place in the world of video game design, however, the best games will always be those that keep gamers excited. Even when the graphics were not excellent, video games had the power to stimulate the imagination, and they do the same today.

All space game designs have their roots in the original space themed video games of years past. They provide the thrill of a multiplayer fantasy world where you can engage in exciting battles with other players.
